FSBO (For Sale By Owner) Facts

  1. It is estimated that 20 - 30% of all homes sold in the U.S. are now sold by owner. In some areas where there is an established regional for sale by owner service, this percentage may be even higher.
  2. A home that has been fairly priced and prepared carefully for the market if given enough exposure can, AND WILL, sell itself.
  3. Consumers who choose to sell by owner are, in fact, making one of the smartest financial moves possible.
  4. Real estate agents will often hold out longer to get more money when selling their own homes than they will those of their clients. (Source: University of Chicago Dept. of Economics Study, 2006) Download the PDF File
  5. Buyers prefer to talk to home owners (and builders) directly when they want to have their questions answered.
  6. Selling "by owner" in a Buyer's Market gives you a competitive edge over other homes that are listed by real estate agents as you can be more flexible in your pricing.
  7. Selling "by owner" in a Seller's Market is a no-brainer. With high demand, sellers are able to attract many buyers and avoid paying a needless commission.
  8. The MLS (Multiple Listing Service) is available to FSBO (for sale by owner) sellers without having to pay a listing agent a 6% commission. In fact, statistics kept by the NAR (National Association of Realtors) credit the MLS with sales that have ACTUALLY been sold privately, by sellers using a flat-fee MLS entry.
  9. When agents hold an open house they are doing it primarily to find new buyers, not to sell the house. Less than 2% of MLS listed homes are sold as a direct result of an agent's open house. For private homesellers, however, open houses can be a great way for buyers to get to know you and your home before committing to a private showing.
